Legendary Vancouver music man Stephen Hamm is releasing a new Theremin Man digital single of the original song Valentina on June 16th 2021.
Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to go into space. On June 16, 1963, she spent almost three days in space and orbited the earth forty-eight times in her space capsule, Vostok 6. An intelligent and sophisticated woman, Valentina stunned the west breaking its stereotype of the Russian woman as a backward peasant.
This is song is a tribute to her strength and her spirit. Stephen Hamm has spent the last number of years mastering the Theremin, an electronic instrument you play but don’t touch. It was invented by Russian physicist Leon Theremin one hundred years ago. Stephen employs the ethereal sound of the Theremin in this song to evoke the magic, excitement and wonder of space travel and the pioneering achievements of this very special woman. Recorded by Hamm and mixed by David ‘Rave’ Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails) this is a synth pop song to celebrate human ingenuity and imagination in these peculiar and dark times.
A seminal figure in Vancouver’s influential music scene, Hamm has played in a number of storied West Coast acts, including Nardwuar and the Evaporators, Canned Hamm, Slow and Tankhog. His latest solo project focuses on the theremin, an esoteric instrument that is played without touch. Following the success of his well-received 2019 album, “Theremin Man,” and the 7” single “Listen to the Sound of the Sun” earlier this year, Valentina delves even further into the creative with an adventurous odyssey into psychedelic electronic worlds.
Combining his larger-than-life personality with the theremin and synthesizer during the Covid-19 pandemic, Space Hamm takes you on a musical journey into new dimensions!
